Former England winger Chris Waddle says Manchester United "need to start from the beginning" with a rebuild after their latest failure.

Talking on BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday night, Waddle said: "Thomas Tuchel has been mentioned as the potential next manager of Manchester United, because of the state Chelsea are in, but will he look at it and think 'wow, this is a massive job, where do we start?'

"It needs cleaning out. They need a scouting system, they need a youth system again. It is basically starting from scratch.

"They have let themselves run and thought money would bail them out, and it hasn't.

"They need to start from the beginning, get the right personnel in and you are talking years before they will be able to compete with Manchester City."

It was a real team effort'

Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (agg 1-2)

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone had a whole lot of reasons to be be overjoyed at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

"I'm happy," he said. "So many people work hard so we can have these moments. It was a brilliant effort from the lads, one of our best games this season.

"We started with a 5-3-2 then changed to a 5-4-1 with Antoine Griezmann on the right of midfield and Renan Lodi growing more and more on the left.

"Lodi's doing really well. He had to wait a long time [to get in the side], but football is marvellous because when you train hard and are ready to go, there's always a chance for you.

"The defence were brilliant and Jan Oblak helped us remain calm throughout. It was a real team effort."
