Police Warn NUP Against Unauthorized Meetings in Mityana

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has been warned by police against holding unauthorized consultative meetings in Mityana District. Racheal Kawala, the Wamala Region Police spokesperson, revealed that NUP planned to hold these meetings on June 4. However, the police management halted any further NUP activities on June 1, 2024, citing concerns over public and road safety.

Official Statement from the Police

Kawala emphasized the police’s stance, stating, “We would like to remind the public that the police management on June 1, 2024, halted any further consultative activities of the National Unity Platform (NUP) as a party, citing public and road safety reasons.” She further warned, “We would like to warn all intending participants and other members of the public not to join the unauthorized processions.”

Law Enforcement Measures

The police have formed a joint task force to enforce this directive. Kawala stressed that the task force would take resolute action against any illegal acts to maintain the rule of law. “We, therefore, urge the public to observe law and order,” she advised. This move aligns with the broader efforts to ensure public safety and adherence to the law.

Actions of the Inspector General of Police

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba, who recently assumed office, played a crucial role in this decision. Byakagaba halted all NUP rallies last week, just two days after they were initially cleared. He directed all police commanders to prevent NUP from proceeding with their planned rally in Mityana Municipality. Byakagaba cited the lawlessness exhibited by NUP on the Masaka road, particularly during an incident involving their President, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.

Incident on the Masaka Road

The crash that claimed three lives from Bobi Wine’s convoy occurred at St Lawrence College, Maya, along the Kampala-Masaka Highway. According to the police, the crash resulted from reckless driving at excessive speeds. Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson, noted that the police had met with NUP leadership to agree on how to conduct their meetings, but the party disregarded the agreed position.

In conclusion, Byakagaba appealed to the public to remain vigilant and observe law and order. He warned that anyone acting contrary to public order and safety would be held accountable under the law. The ongoing situation highlights the tension between NUP and law enforcement, with public safety remaining a paramount concern.
