Arsenal has officially completed the signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal valued at approximately £60 million. The 26-year-old Spanish midfielder becomes the Gunners' second signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrival of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea for £5 million. Arsenal is also reportedly in advanced talks to secure Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres for £70 million.
Zubimendi, who rejected an approach from Liverpool last summer, has been a standout performer for Real Sociedad, making 236 appearances and scoring 10 goals since rising through the club's youth ranks. The deep-lying midfielder has signed a five-year contract with Arsenal, expressing his excitement about the move. "This is a huge moment in my career. It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. Arsenal's style of play fits me perfectly, and I believe the best is yet to come for this team," he said.
Zubimendi played a pivotal role in Spain's Euro 2024 victory, coming on as a substitute for Manchester City's Rodri in the final against England. With 19 international caps to his name, he has established himself as a key figure for the national team, particularly during Rodri's absence due to injury last season.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the new signing, stating, "Martin brings immense quality and football intelligence to our team. His consistent performances for both club and country make him an exciting addition, and we believe he will become a key player for us."
The deal for Zubimendi was finalized after months of negotiations, with Arsenal opting to pay more than his £51 million release clause to spread the cost. The club also faces competition from Real Madrid, who have shown interest in the midfielder. However, Zubimendi's desire to reunite with former Sociedad teammates Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard, coupled with Arteta's vision, ultimately swayed his decision.
In addition to Zubimendi, Arsenal has agreed to sign midfielder Christian Norgaard from Brentford for an initial £10 million. The Gunners are clearly focused on strengthening their squad as they aim to build on their recent successes and challenge for major trophies in the upcoming season.
