Crucial CAF Champions League Matchday 6: Quarter-Final Fates Hanging in the Balance
As the CAF Champions League group stage concludes, several teams face pivotal matches to secure quarter-final berths.
FC Barcelona defends hosting Jerome Boateng after social media criticism highlights the player's history of domestic abuse convictions during the club's anti-violence campaign.
FC Barcelona has addressed mounting criticism after hosting former Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng during a sensitive period in the club's gender violence awareness initiatives. The controversial visit occurred just days before the team's highly anticipated return to the renovated Camp Nou stadium.
Barcelona's social media team shared footage of Boateng interacting with ex-teammate Robert Lewandowski during training, prompting swift backlash from fans. Critics labeled the post "embarrassing" and "ironic" given Boateng's legal history - the German international received a suspended €200,000 fine in 2023 for premeditated bodily harm against a former partner.
"The club remains fully committed to combating gender-based violence. We regret any perception of inconsistency," Barcelona officials stated.
The visit coincided with Barcelona's planned memorial for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, including a minute's silence for female victims of male violence. Club representatives clarified that Boateng's appearance was strictly educational as part of his coaching certification process, emphasizing he holds "no contractual relationship" with the organization.
This isn't Boateng's first coaching opportunity derailed by public outcry. The 2014 World Cup champion previously abandoned a Bayern Munich internship following fan protests. The retired defender, who ended his playing career in September 2024, continues facing scrutiny over abuse allegations from multiple relationships.
Barcelona's statement concluded: "Our tributes to victims of gender violence represent essential, non-negotiable values. Nothing about this visit was meant to contradict that message."
