Bunyaruguru United FC Secures Promotion to FUFA Big League with Penalty Shootout Victory

In an exhilarating contest, Bunyaruguru United Football Club from Rubirizi district has qualified for the second tier division of Ugandan football, the FUFA Big League. This triumph came after a nail-biting 4-1 victory in a post-match penalty shootout over Rwenzori Lions.

The return leg of the promotional playoff ended in a 1-0 win for Bunyaruguru United, equalizing the aggregate scores at 1-1, setting the stage for an intense penalty shootout. Muhammad Kasule was the scorer of Bunyaruguru United's solitary goal in the second half.

During the shootout, captain Hassan Sanya, Mark Ssali, Muhammad Kasule, and Vincent Kibuuka successfully converted their attempts. Goalkeeper Nazir Kibule Obbo impressively saved two of Rwenzori Lion's kicks.

"I am thrilled about this achievement. I express my gratitude to the team management, players, coaches, supporters, and the media," head coach Jajja Noah Mugerwa commented. Jajja Mugerwa credited their success to the disciplined, hardworking, and committed players, which he attributed to the consistent financial support from the club chairman, Hon. David Katureebe Tugume, who is also an aspiring member of parliament for Rubirizi district.

With this victory, Bunyaruguru United joins Kampala's CATDA and Eastern region's Iganga United, who have already secured their places in the second division. The fourth slot will be filled by either Nebbi Central (West Nile) or Young Elephants (Northern region). The second leg between Nebbi Central and Young Elephants will take place on 29th June 2025, with Nebbi Central currently holding a slim 1-0 advantage from the first leg.

Four clubs were relegated from the 2024-2025 FUFA Big League; Booma, MYDA, Busoga United, and Arua Hill.
