In a significant development in the world of football, Borussia Dortmund has confirmed that Chelsea is set to finalize the signing of their winger, Jamie Gittens, following an agreement between the two clubs. The 20-year-old English talent, who has never played first-team football in England, has caught the attention of Chelsea with his impressive performances for Dortmund.
The deal, which amounts to a fee of £48.5m upfront with additional £3.5m in add-ons, was agreed upon during a meeting between the clubs in Fort Lauderdale, where both teams are currently participating in the Club World Cup. The contract details are yet to be finalized, but it has already been reported that Gittens has agreed to a seven-year contract with Chelsea back in June.
Speaking about the transfer, Dortmund's sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, expressed his satisfaction, stating, "The talks with Chelsea were challenging, but ultimately we are pleased that we can most likely realise our financial ambitions and then have planning security." He also wished Gittens all the best and much success in his future endeavors at Chelsea.
Gittens, who joined Dortmund from Manchester City in 2020, has scored 17 goals and made 14 assists in 107 games for the club. However, he will not be able to play for Chelsea until after the Club World Cup.
This transfer marks the fifth signing for Chelsea this summer, following the acquisitions of Ipswich striker Liam Delap, Brighton forward Joao Pedro, Sporting midfielder Dario Essugo, and Strasbourg defender Mamadou Sarr. Estevao Willian is also set to join Chelsea after his Club World Cup campaign with Palmeiras, and he could potentially face his future team in their quarter-final meeting with Palmeiras on Saturday.
