England 2-1 Netherlands: Harvey Elliott double sends Young Lions into second successive U21 Euros final
In an electrifying game in Bratislava, Harvey Elliott's brace propelled England to a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands, securing their second consecutive U21 Euros final appearance. The Young Lions, who won the competition in 2023, will defend their title against Germany in the final on Saturday at 8pm.
The match began in impressive fashion for England, with Harvey Elliott almost scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes, only to be denied by Netherlands goalkeeper Robin Roefs. However, the Dutch equalized after a sequence of England mistakes, as Charlie Cresswell's loose touch allowed Noah Ohio to capitalize, scoring his first touch of the game after coming on as a substitute.
In the second half, both teams continued to match each other, but another magical moment from Elliott sealed England's place in the showpiece final. He collected the ball in midfield, easily outmaneuvered his marker Thom van Bergen, and drilled another superb shot past Roefs.
England had dominated the first half but were left disappointed to go into the break without a goal. However, just after the hour mark, Elliott found the back of the net with a fine finish from an unmarked position on the right.
The Netherlands equalized shortly after, taking advantage of England's miscues. Charlie Cresswell's loose touch gave Ohio the opportunity to score, taking advantage of James Beadle being off his line.
Despite the setback, England responded resiliently, defending bravely in the second half and relying on James Beadle's outstanding saves to keep them in the game.
England boss Lee Carsley was pleased with his team's performance, saying, "I thought the team was outstanding. The way we started the game was really exciting, although disappointed at half-time to come in without scoring." However, he also acknowledged the importance of the entire squad, stating, "We can really look forward to the final."
Harvey Elliott, who scored twice for England, was also pleased with the victory, stating, "It was amazing. Really tough game but to win is incredible. I can't put it into words. Another final but we need to rest, recover and go again because it's not over yet."
England and the Netherlands both took cooling breaks in the sweltering Slovakian heat, but the heat could not deter England from securing their spot in the final. The Young Lions will now look to defend their title against Germany, who defeated France 3-0 in the other semi-final.
