Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey has been formally charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, according to the Metropolitan Police. The alleged incidents reportedly occurred between 2021 and 2022 and involve three separate women. Two counts of rape are linked to one woman, three counts to a second, and a sexual assault charge relates to a third.
The Ghanaian international, who recently left Arsenal after his contract expired, has denied all allegations. His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, stated that Partey "welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name" and has fully cooperated with authorities throughout the three-year investigation. The charges stem from an inquiry that began in February 2022 after police received an initial report of rape.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the investigation, emphasized the priority of supporting the women who have come forward. He urged anyone with relevant information to contact the investigative team via email at CIT@met.police.uk.
Partey, 32, is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, August 5. His lawyer added that due to ongoing legal proceedings, Partey is unable to comment further on the matter.
The midfielder joined Arsenal in October 2020 from Atletico Madrid for £45.3 million, making 35 Premier League appearances last season and scoring four goals. He also played a key role in Arsenal's Champions League campaign, which ended in the semi-finals. Over his tenure, Partey made 130 Premier League appearances for the club, netting nine goals. Internationally, he has earned over 50 caps for Ghana, most recently participating in World Cup qualification matches in March.
Both Arsenal and the Football Association have been contacted for comment, while the Premier League declined to issue a statement.
