Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, toured the advanced UPDF National Referral Hospital in Mbuya, set to transform healthcare for military personnel and civilians.
The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, conducted an extensive inspection of the UPDF National Referral Hospital in Mbuya on July 15, 2025. This cutting-edge medical facility, soon to be inaugurated by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, is designed to significantly enhance healthcare services for Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel, their families, and the general public.
During the tour, Gen Kainerugaba was accompanied by Prof. Ben Mbonye, who guided him through the hospital's six blocks. The facility boasts advanced medical technology, including a helipad for emergency airlifts, VIP treatment wings, emergency services, physiotherapy units, and specialised medical departments. These features aim to provide comprehensive and efficient healthcare solutions.
Gen Kainerugaba has been a vocal advocate for improving the welfare of UPDF members since assuming office last year. His initiatives have focused on enhancing healthcare, ensuring quality education for soldiers' children, and modernising military equipment. The CDF emphasised the importance of efficient service delivery to enable soldiers to perform their duties effectively.
The inspection was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, including Permanent Secretary Rosette Byengoma and Undersecretary Edith Buturo. Once operational, the UPDF National Referral Hospital is expected to set a new standard in Uganda’s healthcare sector, offering world-class medical services and strengthening the UPDF's ability to serve the nation.
This facility represents a significant milestone in Uganda's healthcare development, promising to address critical medical needs and improve overall service delivery for both military and civilian populations.
