The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has emphasized the importance of regional and division/district police commanders (RPCs and DPCs) enhancing their readiness for Uganda's 2026 general elections. Currently engaged in a two-day retreat at the Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, these commanders were addressed by IGP Byakagaba during the opening session on Thursday.
Byakagaba deemed the retreat as particularly timely and significant, urging officers to leverage this opportunity to share experiences and strategies that would contribute to a more secure nation, especially as the 2026 general election activities commence.
"I implore officers to seize this moment to exchange ideas and devise strategies that will ensure our country remains secure, particularly in light of the escalating election activities taking place in 2026," he said.
Byakagaba highlighted that security is a fundamental pillar of society, rooted in culture and religion. He emphasized the crucial role that police commanders play as territorial commanders, stressing their responsibility to maintain peace during the 2026 elections and to support the socio-economic transformation of the population.
The IGP also encouraged the implementation and sustainability of the sub-county policing model, urging commanders to demonstrate leadership in mobilizing both resources and public support for the initiative.
During the same event, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama, underscored the necessity of a peaceful electoral environment before, during, and after the polls. He emphasized the need for a close collaboration between the Electoral Commission and security forces to protect the integrity of the electoral process and uphold public order.
As Uganda gears up for its next general elections, stakeholders from various sectors are working to ensure a smooth, peaceful, and fair voting process.
