Five members of the Iran women's national football team have been granted asylum in Australia amid fears of punishment if they return to their war-torn home country. The Australian government has welcomed them with open arms.
Amidst the ongoing conflict in their home country, five members of the Iran women's national football team have been granted asylum in Australia. The Australian government has extended an offer of asylum to the remaining team members as well.
The five women who sought refuge are Fatemeh Pasandideh, Zahra Ghanbari, Zahra Sarbali, Atefeh Ramazanzadeh, and Mona Hamoudi. They were transported to a safe location by Australian federal police officers, where they met with Australia's Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, to finalize their humanitarian visas.
Burke expressed Australia's willingness to welcome the Iranian women's soccer team, stating, "Australia has taken the Iranian women's soccer team into our hearts." The decision to grant asylum came after US former President Donald Trump urged Australia to provide refuge to any team member seeking it.
The Iranian team had arrived in Australia to participate in the Women's Asian Cup just before the outbreak of the war in Iran. Concerns arose over their safety should they return home, as they had refrained from singing the Iranian national anthem during the tournament, a move that led to threats and accusations on Iranian state TV.
FIFA confirmed its commitment to prioritizing the safety of the five women, stating, "The safety and security of IR Iran's women's national team are FIFA's priority." Refugees can seek asylum in Australia if they fear persecution and serious harm in their home country.
The Australian government's decision to grant asylum to the Iranian women's football team members reflects a gesture of compassion and support during a challenging time for the athletes.
