Jake Paul, the social media sensation turned professional boxer, has taken another step toward a world title opportunity. The World Boxing Association (WBA) has ranked Paul 14th in its latest cruiserweight rankings, following his recent victory over former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
The 28-year-old American defeated Chavez Jr. in a 10-round bout in Kansas on Saturday, marking his 12th professional win. This top-15 ranking now makes Paul eligible to challenge unified world champion Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez, who holds the WBA and WBO titles.
Paul’s rise in the boxing world has been met with mixed reactions. Known for his celebrity status and social media following, he has primarily faced former MMA fighters in the ring. His only loss came in 2023 against Tommy Fury, a former reality TV star. In November, Paul secured a points victory over boxing legend Mike Tyson in a highly publicized match.
Despite his success, Paul’s ranking has sparked controversy among boxing traditionalists, who argue that his limited experience should not place him ahead of more seasoned contenders. Chavez Jr., once a WBC middleweight champion, has struggled in recent years with weight, discipline, and motivation, leading some to question the merit of Paul’s victory.
Following the fight, Paul called out heavyweight contender Anthony Joshua and lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis. He also engaged in a face-off with Ramirez backstage, signaling his intent to challenge the Mexican champion. Ramirez, 33, defended his WBA title on the same card, defeating Yuniel Dorticos to extend his record to 48 wins with one loss.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman hinted that Paul could also earn a ranking with their organization if he continues to perform. While the WBC has yet to release its updated rankings, a top-15 position would make Paul eligible for a title shot under their rules.
Paul’s journey from YouTube star to professional boxer remains a polarizing topic, but his latest ranking ensures he remains a prominent figure in the sport’s ongoing evolution.
