Lando Norris savored a historic victory at the British Grand Prix, claiming his first win at Silverstone in a dramatic race marked by challenging weather conditions and intense competition. The McLaren driver, who narrowly avoided injury when a photographer accidentally knocked the winner's trophy into his face during celebrations, described the triumph as "very, very special."
Norris, 25, dedicated the win to his family and fans, calling it a dream come true. "Being on top in your home race is something I’ve dreamed of for years," he said. "Today, I got to live that feeling myself. It’s pretty amazing and more special than ever."
The victory was McLaren's first at Silverstone since 2008, adding to the team's resurgence this season. Norris celebrated with his signature 'shoey' ritual, joined by teammate Oscar Piastri and McLaren CEO Zak Brown. Despite the jubilation, Piastri's race was marred by a 10-second penalty for what stewards deemed erratic driving under the safety car, a decision he called "very harsh."
Piastri, who had been in contention for the win, expressed confusion over the penalty, stating he had followed the same procedure in previous laps. "I didn’t do anything differently," he said. "I’ll have to review it, but I felt it was well within the rules."
Norris acknowledged Piastri's strong performance, praising his teammate for an "extremely good race." The win narrowed the championship gap between the two McLaren drivers to just eight points, marking Norris’s second consecutive victory after his triumph in Austria.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella supported Piastri, describing the penalty as unfair. "It was very harsh on Oscar," Stella said. "He drove brilliantly and deserved better."
Norris, while celebrating his success, remained grounded, emphasizing the need for consistency. "Two wins are great, but it’s still one race at a time," he said. "I need to keep working hard and maintain this momentum."
The British Grand Prix delivered a mix of drama and emotion, cementing McLaren’s return to the forefront of Formula 1 and providing fans with a memorable spectacle at Silverstone.
