Liverpool FC has made a historic decision to retire the number 20 shirt in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain on July 3. This marks the first time in the club’s 133-year history that a player’s number has been permanently retired.
The tribute will apply to all levels of the club, including the men’s first team, women’s team, and academy sides. The decision was made after extensive consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute, and other family members, ensuring they were the first to be informed of the club’s intentions.
In a statement, Liverpool FC said, “This move recognizes not only Diogo’s immense contributions to the team’s success over the past five years but also the profound personal impact he had on his teammates, colleagues, and supporters. His legacy and the connections he built will forever remain a part of our club.”
Club CEO Michael Edwards added, “We were acutely aware of the sentiment among our supporters and felt the same way. It was crucial to involve Diogo’s family in this decision. This is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person, and by retiring the number 20, we ensure his memory lives on eternally.”
Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020, wore the number 20 shirt with pride and distinction, helping the club achieve numerous on-pitch successes. “He will forever be our number 20,” Edwards emphasized.
In addition to retiring the shirt, Liverpool will pay tribute to Jota and his brother during their pre-season friendly against Preston on Sunday. The match will feature a rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” a minute’s silence, and digital tributes displayed on the stadium screens. Players from both teams will wear black armbands, and Preston will lay a wreath alongside Liverpool supporters. The match program will also include written tributes to Jota and Silva.
This heartfelt gesture underscores the lasting impact Diogo Jota had on Liverpool FC and its community, ensuring his legacy will never be forgotten.
