Crucial CAF Champions League Matchday 6: Quarter-Final Fates Hanging in the Balance
As the CAF Champions League group stage concludes, several teams face pivotal matches to secure quarter-final berths.
Mali narrowly defeated debutants South Sudan 55-53 in a tense Women's Afrobasket group stage clash on Sunday.
Mali's women's basketball team claimed a dramatic 55-53 victory against tournament newcomers South Sudan in their opening Afrobasket 2025 matchup at Palais des Sport Arena on Sunday.
Making their continental championship debut after receiving a wild card entry, South Sudan delivered an inspiring performance that nearly upset the Malian squad. The newcomers had previously failed to qualify in both 2021 and 2023 attempts.
The closely contested game saw Mali establish an early 19-15 first-quarter lead before South Sudan fought back to tie the game 30-30 by halftime. Mali regained control in the third quarter (46-41) but struggled offensively in the final period, scoring just nine points.
The narrow victory keeps Mali's championship hopes alive while South Sudan demonstrated they belong at Africa's top women's basketball competition.
