A 23-year-old man was brutally lynched by a mob in Kabale District, Uganda, following accusations of mistreating his elderly father. The victim, identified as Peter Mutabazi from Nyarungwe Village, was alleged to have repeatedly assaulted his 70-year-old father, John Turyamureba, and stolen his property.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Rubira Trading Centre, where Mutabazi was ambushed by local residents. Armed with sticks, bricks, and a hoe, the mob fatally attacked him on the spot. Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the event and stated that authorities are actively investigating to identify and apprehend those involved.
Maate strongly condemned the act of mob justice, urging the community to avoid taking the law into their own hands. "We encourage residents to report suspected criminals to the appropriate authorities for proper legal action," he emphasized. A murder case has been registered at Kyanamira Police Post and transferred to Kabale Central Police Station for further investigation.
Police officials visited the scene, documented evidence, and recorded statements from witnesses. A postmortem examination was also conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, vowing to ensure they face justice for their actions.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of mob justice and the need for communities to rely on lawful processes to address grievances.
