Newcastle United Secure Agreement for Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55m

Newcastle United are reported to have reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for the transfer of Anthony Elanga, a Swedish winger, for an impressive £55m. The deal, subject to finalization, marks Newcastle's first significant acquisition of the summer transfer window.

According to BBC Sport sources, Newcastle is keen on reinforcing their attacking options as they prepare for their return to the Champions League following a commendable fifth-place finish in the 2024-25 Premier League season. Elanga, aged 23, demonstrated his prowess with Nottingham Forest, scoring six goals and contributing 11 assists last season.

Newcastle United have yet to make a payment for a player this summer, with Spanish winger Antonio Cordero being the sole arrival on a free transfer from Malaga. Nottingham Forest is believed to have paid £15m to secure Elanga from Manchester United on a five-year contract in 2023, after he joined the Red Devils at the age of 12 and made 55 appearances.

Elanga's impressive performances have caught the attention of Newcastle, with his statistical profile showcasing his growth and excellence in key attacking metrics. He ranks in the top percentiles among Premier League attacking midfielders and wingers for goal-creating actions, shots-on-target percentage, crosses, progressive carries, and goals-per-shot ratio.

The arrival of Elanga would address Newcastle's requirements for speed, efficiency, and creativity in the final third. As a versatile player who can play both wide and centrally, Elanga is expected to bring the necessary dynamism to Newcastle's attack, both domestically and in Europe.

Nottingham Forest was initially reluctant to let Elanga go, but with Newcastle willing to pay £55m and meet their asking price, the situation has changed. Although Elanga did not push for a move, a record-breaking sale is too attractive to decline.

Forest had managed to keep Elanga from the Magpies last season but this time around, they are set to receive a £40m profit after signing him for around £15m two years ago. The departure of Elanga, a crucial part of Forest's season and playing style, may leave them short in the wide areas, as fellow winger Ramon Sosa is also expected to join Palmeiras in Brazil.

Forest are believed to be focusing on smart signings as they prepare for their European campaign, with PSV's Johan Bakayoko being a long-term target. The Eredivisie champion scored 11 goals last season, and his addition could help Forest bolster their squad for the upcoming challenges.
