As the TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 approaches, Senegal’s head coach Souleymane Diallo has issued a clear message to his squad: commitment to the national team comes first. Diallo, who recently trimmed his squad from 35 to 29 players after trial matches against Guinea, made it known that he will not tolerate players prioritizing personal contracts over national duty.

“We’re not a fitness club or a stepping stone for contract hunters,” Diallo stated, as reported by the CAF website. “If a player is planning to leave for a trial abroad, he’s out. The national team is for those committed to wearing the jersey during the tournament, not those using it as a platform for personal deals.”

Diallo revealed that the team has conducted thorough investigations to ensure that only fully committed players remain in the squad. “We investigate thoroughly,” he emphasized. “And if there’s any doubt about availability, we don’t waste time.”

Meanwhile, Diallo praised Guinea, one of Uganda’s opponents in the tournament, following two challenging matches. Despite a goalless draw and a narrow 1-0 victory for Senegal, Diallo acknowledged Guinea’s strength. “Guinea was no easy opponent,” he said. “They’re quick, technically gifted, and dangerous between the lines. We leave with key insights—not just about them, but about our own readiness.”

Senegal, the defending champions, are placed in Group C alongside Congo, Sudan, and Nigeria. The team will be based in Zanzibar as they aim to retain their title. With Diallo’s focus on commitment and teamwork, Senegal is gearing up for a formidable campaign in CHAN 2024.
