According to Officer Tiago Luiz Lemos from the Praia Grande police station, the pilot recounted that a fire erupted within the balloon's basket. In a desperate attempt to avert disaster, the pilot began descending the balloon. As the balloon neared the ground, individuals were instructed to jump off. Tragically, not everyone was able to do so before the flames intensified. The balloon, burdened by the weight of the remaining passengers, ascended again briefly before plummeting due to a suspension failure.
The survivors, totaling 13, were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment. Governor Mello, currently in China on official duties, expressed his sorrow over the incident and mobilized the state resources to assist the affected families. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also conveyed his condolences, offering federal support to the victims and emphasizing the collaborative efforts of state and municipal agencies in the rescue operations.
