In a heartbreaking turn of events, Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, a vital member of the Liverpool squad, lost his life in a car accident. The tragic incident occurred as Jota was on his way to take a ferry from Santander, Spain, to return to Liverpool for the commencement of pre-season training, scheduled for Monday. The 28-year-old forward had been advised by doctors to avoid flying due to recent minor surgery.

Jota, along with his brother, Andre Silva, were involved in a car crash in the Spanish province of Zamora. The Guardia Civil confirmed that both men died around 00:30 local time on Thursday, following a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle. Zamora, located near the Portuguese border, is approximately 190 miles from Porto and a similar distance from the port.

It is understood that Jota had also traveled by road and sea to attend his wedding 11 days ago in Porto, where he wed his long-term partner, Rute. The couple has three children together.
