The Uganda Rugby Cranes are now grappling with the looming threat of relegation following a disappointing 24-12 defeat to Morocco in the Rugby Africa Cup 5th Place Semifinal. The match, played on home soil, saw the Atlas Lions dominate from the outset, leaving the Cranes struggling to regain control.
Morocco set the tone early, scoring their first try within the initial 10 minutes through scrumhalf Theo Bachiri, who capitalized on a penalty and quick tap. This was followed by another try from Yascine Maamry, extending their lead to 14-0. Uganda’s first-half performance was marred by poor decision-making, lost lineouts, and handling errors, leaving them trailing significantly at halftime.
Despite a brief resurgence in the second half, with Philip Wokorach scoring two tries for Uganda, Morocco maintained their dominance. The Atlas Lions sealed their victory with two additional tries, one of which was contested by the Ugandan team for alleged foul play.
With this defeat, Uganda now faces a decisive clash against Ivory Coast to determine which team will remain in the elite division and which will face relegation. The Cranes must regroup and refine their strategy to avoid dropping out of the top tier.
