Uganda's U20 women's team has booked a place in the final qualification round of the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup by defeating Zambia.
In response to a violent killing in Kasangati, Uganda's top police official has directed heightened security efforts to address rising criminal activity.
Uganda's Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba has ordered intensified security measures in Kasangati and neighboring regions following the fatal shooting of local businessman Deo Bwanika during a robbery at his premises on August 13, 2025.
Byakagaba conducted an unexpected visit to the Kasangati Police Division headquarters on Thursday, a day after the incident, to address senior officers and reinforce directives. During the meeting, he emphasized the need for unwavering discipline, community-focused policing, and efficient resource allocation to bolster public safety. The IGP also reiterated his commitment to eradicating corruption within the force, urging accountability and ethical conduct among personnel.
The attack occurred around 10:00 p.m. on August 13 when six masked individuals, armed with firearms and machetes, stormed Bwanika's business on Nangabo Road in Kitagobwa. Posing as customers, the perpetrators demanded cash, leading to a confrontation that ended in Bwanika's death. One employee, Julius, was injured in the crossfire but is expected to recover. The suspects fled the scene on two motorcycles, leaving behind a significant amount of cash, though the exact figure remains undisclosed.
Authorities have secured the crime scene and are conducting a thorough investigation, including collecting witness accounts and preserving evidence. Bwanika's body was transported to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination. As of Thursday evening, no arrests had been made, prompting police to appeal to the public for information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the culprits.
Byakagaba's directive underscores a broader push to strengthen police-community partnerships and combat organized crime. He highlighted the importance of proactive patrols and public cooperation in dismantling such threats. The incident has reignited concerns about safety in the area, with residents calling for swift justice and improved security infrastructure.
