In a recent media briefing, Dr. Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairperson of the Communications and Signage Committee of the Local Organizing Committee (LoC), announced that ticket prices for the CHAN 2024 tournament in Uganda will be kept affordable for all spectators. The prices are expected to be disclosed to the public within the next week, as per advice from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Mugimba, joined by Mr. Mark Namanya, PR and Communications Manager at the CHAN/AFCON Secretariat; Mr. Rodgers Mulindwa, Vice Chairman of the LoC Communications Committee; and Mr. William Fredrick Blick, Ex Officio Member of the LoC, revealed that delays in preparations are due to CAF's procurement procedures.
“Given that this is a CAF tournament, we are adhering to the CAF procurement procedures, and we are currently evaluating bids for ticketing firms, advertising, and additional transportation,” Mugimba stated. He highlighted that all arrangements will be finalized before the start of the competition, ensuring transparency for the general public.
Mugimba expressed gratitude towards the government for the payment of the committee fees for both CHAN ($13 million) and AFCON 2027 ($30 million) as well as $750,000 for LED screens at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, the host stadium for the competition in Uganda.
To accommodate the teams and officials, seven hotels have been booked, including the Kampala Serena Hotel, Four Points Sheraton, Hilton Hotel, Skyz Hotel Naguru, and Sheraton Hotel, Kampala. For inland transport, 100 vehicles used during the recently concluded NAM conference will be utilized, with more vehicles still needed, according to Mugimba. Four hospitals, including Mulago, Victoria University, Kisubi, Nakasero Hospital, and Entebbe, have also been designated for medical services.
To involve the entire population, the CHAN trophy will embark on a tour of various regions, although specific locations were not disclosed by Mugimba. He encouraged everyone to take part in the event, stating, “We want every Ugandan to feel part of this moment. CHAN 2024 is not just about football — it's about showcasing who we are as a nation.”
A single Pamoja Visa will be issued to accredited journalists and possibly fans to ensure a smooth experience during the tournament.
