In a surprising twist to his football career, former Premier League striker Andy Carroll has signed with sixth-tier club Dagenham and Redbridge. The 36-year-old, who has previously played for Newcastle United, Liverpool, and West Ham, will now compete in the National League South next season.

Carroll joked about his children's reaction to the move, saying, "My kids thought I was signing for Chelsea — they’ll be in for a shock." The striker, who also invested in the Essex-based club, expressed his excitement about the new chapter, emphasizing the opportunity to play closer to his family. "It’s a fantastic location and close to my kids, they will be able to come and see me play," he added.

Carroll joins Dagenham and Redbridge on a free transfer after leaving French fourth-tier side Bordeaux at the end of last season. Despite receiving more lucrative offers from clubs in France, Italy, and Spain, Carroll chose the English club, citing his desire to settle with his family and contribute to the team's growth. "I was offered clubs with a lot more money, but I realised Dagenham was a project that I really wanted to get into," he explained.

The former England international, who earned nine caps and scored twice for his country, is no stranger to high-profile moves. Carroll was once the subject of a British record transfer fee when he joined Liverpool for £35 million in 2011. However, he insists that his decision to join Dagenham and Redbridge is not driven by financial gain. "It’s never been about the money for me. I just love playing football," he said.

Carroll will be managed by former Bournemouth and Manchester City striker Lee Bradbury at Dagenham and Redbridge. The club recently confirmed a takeover by a Qatari investment group, signaling ambitious plans for the future. Carroll is eager to contribute both on and off the pitch, aiming to help the club achieve promotion. "My first job is to go in as a player, I want to get them promoted," he stated.

This move marks Carroll's return to English football after a brief stint abroad. Despite the unexpected nature of the transfer, Carroll remains optimistic about the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the National League South.
