Arsenal has once again turned to their London rivals Chelsea to bolster their squad, this time securing the signature of Marcell Washington, the son of Chelsea legend Ryan Bertrand. The 17-year-old left-back has signed his first professional contract with the Gunners after impressing during a trial period last season.

Washington, who departed Chelsea's youth academy last year, now aims to carve out a successful career at Arsenal, even setting his sights on surpassing his father's achievements. Ryan Bertrand famously made history during his European debut in the 2012 Champions League final, helping Chelsea clinch the title.

"It's been such an honor to have him guide me through my games and help me improve," Washington said of his father. "He’s passionate about making me a better player—maybe even a better version of him."

Assigned the number 55 shirt, Washington is eager to compete with established players like Jurrien Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly for a spot in Arsenal's first team. "Training with such experienced and skilled players is invaluable," he added. "It’s a great opportunity to learn and grow."

Washington’s signing is part of a broader trend of Arsenal poaching talent from Chelsea. Since Mikel Arteta took charge, the Gunners have signed five first-team players from their rivals, including Jorginho, Kai Havertz, and most recently, Kepa Arrizabalaga. Reports also suggest Arsenal are closing in on a £50 million deal for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, further cementing their reliance on the Blues for reinforcements.

However, this strategy has sparked frustration among Arsenal fans, especially given the mixed success of previous Chelsea acquisitions like Raheem Sterling and Willian. Concerns over Madueke’s potential impact have even led to an online petition against his signing, which has garnered nearly 5,000 signatures.

As Arsenal continues to raid Chelsea for talent, the pressure is on for these signings to deliver on the pitch and justify the club’s transfer strategy.
