Aston Villa made significant strides in strengthening their squad on Transfer Deadline Day, acquiring Jadon Sancho, Harvey Elliott, and Victor Lindelof to bolster both attack and defense under manager Unai Emery.
Jadon Sancho Joins on Loan
The 25-year-old winger, who previously spent a season on loan at Chelsea, has joined Aston Villa on a straight loan from Manchester United. Villa will cover 80% of Sancho's wages during his tenure at the club. The German international, who was signed by United for £73 million in 2021, returned to Old Trafford after Chelsea paid a £5 million penalty to terminate their obligation to buy him. Sancho, a 23-time England cap, is expected to provide attacking depth as Villa aims to reverse their poor start to the Premier League season, which saw them score just once in their first three matches.
Harvey Elliott Secures Permanent Move with Loan Obligation
Villa also confirmed the loan signing of Harvey Elliott from Liverpool, with a £35 million obligation to make the transfer permanent. The England U21 midfielder, who featured sparingly for the Reds in the opening weeks of the season—only one minute off the bench against Newcastle—has sought a fresh challenge. Elliott, who made 18 Premier League appearances last term, scored one goal and provided two assists. His versatility in central midfield, attacking roles, and even on the wing aligns with Emery's tactical flexibility, following the departure of Leon Bailey and Jacob Ramsey this summer.
Victor Lindelof Returns to the Premier League
Victor Lindelof, a former Manchester United defender, has signed a two-year deal with Villa after leaving Old Trafford at the end of his contract in June. The Sweden international, who made over 250 appearances for United and won the Carabao Cup and Europa League, expressed excitement about the move, stating, "It's a massive club, and I was super excited when I heard that the club wanted me. Hopefully, I can help the younger players with my experience and bring the quality I show on the pitch." Lindelof's arrival adds depth to Villa's defensive options, particularly in the absence of key players.
Other Incomings
Villa's transfer activity extended beyond the trio, with additional signings including Yasin Ozcan (Kasimpasa, undisclosed), Zepiqueno Redmond (Feyenoord, free transfer), Marco Bizot (Brest, undisclosed), Modou Keba Cisse (LASK, undisclosed), and Evann Guessand (Nice, £28 million). These moves reflect Emery's strategy to enhance squad depth and competitiveness ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
"Sancho's arrival will be vital for our attacking options, while Elliott's potential and Lindelof's experience offer stability and growth," Emery said in a club statement.
The signings signal Villa's intent to rebuild and challenge in the upcoming season, leveraging the deadline to address gaps left by summer departures and integrate new talent into Emery's system.
