Bayer Leverkusen has officially acquired Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah in a £35 million transfer, solidifying their defensive line for the future. The 22-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with the German Bundesliga club, marking his departure from Anfield after 58 appearances and three goals for the Reds.
Quansah, who recently helped England’s Under-21 team secure victory in the European Championship against Germany, joins Leverkusen as part of a busy transfer window between the two clubs. Earlier this summer, Liverpool signed Leverkusen’s midfielder Florian Wirtz and defender Jeremie Frimpong, making this the third significant deal between the teams.
The young defender’s move comes after Liverpool rejected a proposal from Newcastle last summer, which would have seen Quansah included in a deal for winger Anthony Gordon. As a homegrown player, the £35 million fee will count as pure profit for Liverpool under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
Quansah, a product of Liverpool’s academy, played a pivotal role in the club’s League Cup triumph in 2024 and made 13 league appearances last season as they clinched the Premier League title under manager Arne Slot. Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, praised Quansah’s abilities, stating, “He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defence dominated by world-class players. With Jarell, our defence gains significant dynamism, pace, and toughness in tackling. He’s another very important building block for the future.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s defensive reshuffle continues as they eye Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. The Reds face uncertainty over the futures of Ibrahima Konaté, whose contract expires in 12 months, and Joe Gomez, who has yet to secure an extension.
Quansah’s move to Leverkusen highlights the growing ties between the two clubs and underscores the German side’s ambition to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
