Belarus Opposition Leader’s Husband Released from Prison and Reunited with Wife in Exile

In a surprising turn of events, Sergei Tikhanovsky, the husband of Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, has been freed from prison in Belarus after spending five years behind bars. Along with 13 other political prisoners, Tikhanovsky was released and promptly relocated to Lithuania, where he was joyfully reunited with his wife, who has been living in exile in the capital city of Vilnius.

The release of Tikhanovsky, an outspoken opposition activist, came as a welcome surprise to many. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya shared a heartwarming 10-second video capturing the emotional moment of their reunion, expressing the indescribable joy she felt in her heart upon seeing her husband again after such a long separation.

The unexpected development coincided with a visit to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, by US special envoy Keith Kellogg, who held discussions with the country's authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko. As part of the release, 14 political prisoners, including five Belarusian nationals and citizens of Japan, Poland, and Sweden, were granted freedom. However, Tikhanovsky's release stands out as the most prominent among them.

Sergei Tikhanovsky, a former social media influencer with a significant following in Belarus, was known for his vocal opposition to Lukashenko's regime. Despite the risks posed by the repressive government, he fearlessly engaged with people across the country, amplifying their voices and concerns through his activism.

Tikhanovsky's imprisonment in 2021, on charges of inciting mass protests against Lukashenko, led to his wife, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, stepping into the political arena in his place during the presidential elections. Her subsequent bid for presidency sparked widespread protests, resulting in her forced exile following Lukashenko's disputed victory.
