Thomas Frank, the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, has expressed understanding for the fans who continue to chant the name of former manager Mauricio Pochettino during matches. This phenomenon was notably observed during the recent 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.
Frank, who took the reins at Spurs in June, has faced criticism for his approach to managing expectations, which is seen as less ambitious than that of previous managers like Pochettino and Ange Postecoglou.
In a recent interview with the High Performance Podcast, Pochettino emphasized that Spurs should have aspirations of winning the Champions League and Premier League titles. This statement came just days after Frank admitted that the club was still in a transitional phase, despite their Europa League triumph last season.
Frank, who has been navigating a challenging season with a team plagued by injuries, has nothing but respect for Pochettino. He described the Argentine as a "legend" for his significant contributions during his five-and-a-half-year tenure.
"He was part of transforming the club, from where it was to being close to winning the Premier League title and reaching the Champions League final," Frank said. "If you are close, then you are very close to winning it. Sometimes it's football, it's margins. Pochettino did a top job here and is a true legend, so if the fans sing his name it's well deserved."
Despite the team's struggles, with only six points separating them from the relegation zone, Frank remains focused on the upcoming match against Newcastle. He repeatedly used the word "desperate" to describe the team's need to secure victories and climb the table, carefully avoiding the term "relegation."
"I'm very aware that we used the word 'desperate' before," Frank stated. "We are very, very focused on doing everything we can to win the next game because we need to win games, we need to climb the table, we need to get up there. So, no doubt about that."
