Brentford have officially declined Newcastle United's upgraded £40 million proposal for star striker Yoane Wissa, signaling their continued resistance to the transfer. The bid, which included an initial £35 million fee plus £5 million in performance-related add-ons, was presented by the Magpies following earlier failed negotiations. However, sources indicate the offer still fell short of Brentford’s valuation for the DR Congo forward, who has been vocal about his desire to join the north-eastern club.
Newcastle initially pursued Wissa with a £30 million offer earlier this summer, but the player’s frustrations boiled over after he abruptly left the club’s pre-season camp in Portugal in July. At the time, Wissa warned he would refuse to train or play for Brentford unless his transfer to St James’ Park was finalized. While tensions appeared to ease slightly, allowing him to resume first-team training, his insistence on moving to Newcastle has not wavered.
The 28-year-old, who netted 19 Premier League goals last season, had reportedly discussed his future with Brentford owner Matthew Benham in a bid to secure his exit. Wissa had anticipated a breakthrough after the club signed Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth to replace him, but Brentford remain unmoved. The decision to reject the latest bid comes as the club also lost forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United this summer, compounding their challenges in retaining key players.
Wissa’s social media activity has further underscored his discontent, as he recently removed all Brentford-related content from his Instagram profile. BBC Sport first reported his early return from the pre-season trip, highlighting the ongoing stalemate between the clubs. With the transfer window entering its final stages, the situation remains unresolved, leaving both parties in a high-stakes tug-of-war over the striker’s future.
