Bruce Carrington's Title Aspirations Set to Rise with Upcoming Fights
Featherweight contender Bruce Carrington is on the cusp of a significant title opportunity as reports indicate that WBC champion Stephen Fulton is set to clash with O'Shaquie Foster. This bout, scheduled for August 16, will see Foster defend his WBC world super-featherweight title.
As Fulton, who holds a record of 23-1 with 8 KOs, steps into the ring against Foster, currently boasting a record of 23-3 with 12 KOs, he is expected to relinquish his championship status at 126 lbs. Consequently, this would enable Rey Vargas to reclaim his previous title. Vargas had been designated as 'champion in recess' due to a leg injury but is anticipated to make a voluntary defense of his green and gold belt against Carlos Castro.
In the latest updates from the WBC, Vargas, who faced a contentious draw against Nick Ball last March despite being knocked down twice, is preparing for his imminent title defense. Meanwhile, Carrington, who remains unbeaten at 15-0 with 9 KOs, is gearing up for a WBC interim title fight against Namibia's Mateus Heita on July 26. Heita is an undefeated fighter but has yet to establish himself on a global scale.
Should Carrington emerge victorious in his upcoming bout, the WBC has confirmed that he will face the winner of the Vargas vs. Castro match for the full WBC title. Carrington has been vocal about his desire for a title shot, even as his record does not fully reflect the level of competition he has faced. His next challenge will mark his first 12-round contest, featured on the undercard of Xander Zayas vs. Jorge Perez.
With the potential for a showdown between Vargas and Carrington on the horizon, Fulton is simultaneously aiming to become a three-division world champion, adding further intrigue to the featherweight division.
