Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is set to make history on Saturday as he prepares to play in his 300th game for the club against Brighton. In an exclusive interview, Fernandes reflected on his journey so far, his decision to reject a massive £100m offer from Al Hilal, and his aspirations for the future.
Nearly six years after joining United from Sporting in a deal worth up to £68m, Fernandes has been an integral part of the team, with 187 goal contributions - 100 goals and 87 assists - in 299 games. "It was a dream to play for this club," Fernandes said, recalling his move to Old Trafford. "I was hungry enough to do everything because for me, the first chance was the last one, so I had to make it."
A Saudi Arabian proposition
Last summer, Fernandes was the subject of intense interest from Saudi Arabia, with Al Hilal ready to make a substantial offer. However, after discussions with United's director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada in Malaysia, Fernandes decided to stay at Old Trafford. "I spoke with both Jason and Omar, and they said they wouldn't say no but wanted me to stay at the club," Fernandes revealed.
He also sought the advice of Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, who now plays in Saudi Arabia for Al Nassr. "Cristiano told me his opinion on what I should do," Fernandes said. "It was important for me to hear what he thought, given his experience."
Trophy ambitions
As Fernandes approaches his 300th game, he remains focused on bringing major silverware to Old Trafford. Having already won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup as captain, Fernandes shares United's ambition to win the Premier League by 2028. "Every season, I come back with the belief that we can achieve something," he said. "Everyone knows my aim is to win the Premier League and the Champions League."
With a successful history at United and a clear vision for the future, Fernandes is poised to continue making a significant impact at Old Trafford. As he celebrates this milestone, his sights are firmly set on achieving greatness with the club.
