In a thrilling encounter at the Benjamin Mpaka National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Burkina Faso secured a memorable 4-2 victory over the Central African Republic (CAR) in their CHAN 2024 Group B match. This win was particularly significant for Burkina Faso, as it marked their first-ever triumph in the tournament following their opening loss to co-hosts Tanzania.
The match was an exciting display of skill and determination, with Burkina Faso taking an early lead through Papus Ouattara in the 11th minute. However, CAR quickly responded, with Sydney Tchibinda equalizing just five minutes later. The first half ended with the scores level at 1-1.
The second half saw Burkina Faso regain control, with Abdoul Abass Guiro converting a well-taken penalty in the 61st minute to restore their lead. Patrick Malo added another penalty 12 minutes from full time, extending the West Africans' advantage to 3-2. Abdoul Baguian then sealed the deal with a clinical finish in the 84th minute. CAR managed a late consolation goal through Ange Zoumara in the fifth minute of added time, but it was too little, too late.
Papus Ouattara was adjudged the man of the match for his goal and overall contribution. The result leaves Burkina Faso with three points from their two matches, while CAR remains without a point. In the same group, Tanzania continued their strong form by defeating Mauritania 1-0, thanks to an 89th-minute goal from veteran defender Shomari Kapombe.
The CHAN 2024 tournament, which features players from domestic leagues across Africa, was originally scheduled for 2024 but was postponed to 2025. The competition is being hosted across four countries: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar.
This victory will undoubtedly boost Burkina Faso's confidence as they aim to build momentum in their quest for CHAN glory. With the tournament still in its early stages, all teams in Group B will be looking to capitalize on their opportunities in the coming matches.
