CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has reassured the co-hosts of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that the tournament will proceed as initially planned. This comes amid reports suggesting a potential postponement due to concerns over the readiness of the host nations' sporting infrastructure.
Speaking to the media on Friday in Dar es Salaam following the CAF Executive Committee Meeting, Motsepe addressed the speculation head-on. "AFCON 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will be enormously successful," he stated. "I've seen recent speculations in the media and on social platforms, even in the Guardian Newspaper in London, suggesting that I'm here to relocate the tournament. That is entirely unfounded."
Motsepe acknowledged potential challenges but emphasized the importance of believing in Africa's capabilities. He drew parallels with past AFCON tournaments in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, where similar doubts were raised but ultimately proven wrong.
Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are diligently working to meet CAF's hosting requirements. A CAF inspection team is currently in the region assessing the readiness of various infrastructures, including roads, rail networks, airports, hospitals, training grounds, and stadiums.
Motsepe's remarks come as a boost to the co-hosts, who are eager to showcase their readiness and commitment to delivering a successful AFCON 2027.
