Calvary FC made history on Wednesday by securing their first point in the Uganda Premier League (UPL) after a hard-fought goalless draw against Maroons FC at Luzira’s Prisons Ground. The Yumbe-based side, which had endured back-to-back losses in their opening two matches of the season, finally ended their points drought, climbing from the bottom of the table to 13th place.
In their debut campaign, Calvary struggled to find their footing, surrendering a 1-0 lead to Lugazi FC in their season opener before falling 3-1 to fellow newcomers Buhimba United Saints in the second round. This time, however, the team demonstrated resilience, with coach Umar Abdallah opting for tactical adjustments to stave off defeat. Despite Maroons’ usual attacking flair, the match remained deadlock until the 45th minute, when Abdallah replaced Emmanuel Obua with Baden Mujahid in a bid to disrupt the opposition’s rhythm.
The encounter saw both sides squander chances, with neither team able to break the stalemate. The result marks a pivotal moment for Calvary, offering a glimmer of hope as they aim to establish themselves in the competitive UPL. Meanwhile, Maroons FC, who had previously lost 2-1 to the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), now sit ninth in the standings with four points.
