Violence broke out at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium during Lionel Messi's promotional tour of India, with furious fans hurling chairs and water bottles onto the pitch after the football legend's unexpectedly brief appearance.

Premium Tickets, Poor Visibility

Thousands of supporters had paid up to ₹12,000 (£100/$133) for tickets, expecting more than the 20-minute walkaround where Messi was largely obscured by officials and celebrities. "We couldn't even see his face properly," one fan told ANI news agency, while another complained to Press Trust of India about spending "a month's salary" for the disappointing experience.

Tour Highlights Overshadowed

The incident marred Messi's "GOAT Tour" which had begun with the unveiling of a 70-foot statue in Kolkata. The Inter Miami star appeared virtually at the statue's reveal due to security concerns, while his physical appearance at the stadium featured teammate Luis Suárez and Argentina's Rodrigo de Paul.

Official Response

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced an inquiry, stating she was "deeply disturbed" by the events. Authorities arrested the event's chief organizer and are exploring ticket refunds. The All India Football Federation clarified it wasn't involved in this private event.

Fan Devotion Undimmed

Despite the chaos, Messi's Indian fanbase remains passionate. Corporate lawyer Hitesh, who flew 1,900km from Bengaluru, told the BBC: "Messi gives me hope that with talent you can do anything." The tour continues with fan zones featuring replicas of Messi's Miami home and trophy displays.
