Chelsea Football Club has reached a significant financial milestone this transfer window, with total player sales exceeding £250 million following the agreement to sell defender Renato Veiga to Spanish side Villarreal.
The Blues will receive a fee rising to £26 million for the 22-year-old Portuguese international. Veiga is slated to undergo a medical in Spain on Thursday and sign a seven-year contract with Villarreal, who are committing a fee close to their transfer record. This substantial sale contributes to Chelsea's unprecedented summer transfer revenue.
Veiga, deemed surplus to requirements by manager Enzo Maresca, had been training separately with a group of senior players dubbed the 'bomb squad'. His departure followed a request to play centrally rather than at left-back last season. Chelsea achieves a notable profit on the defender, having signed him from FC Basel in 2024 for £12 million. Veiga made just one Premier League start during his 18 total appearances for Chelsea, spending part of last season on loan at Juventus.
This transfer brings Chelsea's estimated player sales revenue to £251.7 million, generated from 11 departing players. Major exits included:
- Noni Madueke to Arsenal (£48m initial fee)
- João Félix to Al-Nassr (£43.7m potential fee)
- Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Everton (£28m)
Chelsea remain active in the market, pursuing Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons before the window closes on September 1st. Simultaneously, the club continues efforts to offload additional squad members, including Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, and Axel Disasi.
