Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has firmly stated that the club must retain defender Marc Guehi, even as Liverpool submitted a revised £35 million offer for the captain. Guehi showcased his importance on Sunday by leading the Eagles to a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, scoring a remarkable curling goal that highlighted his attacking prowess.
The bid from Liverpool, which included a 10% sell-on clause, has sparked intense discussions between the clubs. While Sky Sports News reports that Crystal Palace could consider the offer if it includes an additional £5 million in add-ons, Glasner has made it clear that the team cannot afford to lose their defensive linchpin without a suitable replacement.
"We have to [keep Guehi] if we want to play a successful season," Glasner asserted. "Our defensive structure is the foundation of our success, and finding an immediate replacement in the Premier League is impossible. Marc is a vital part of this, not just as a player but as our captain."
Despite the financial temptation, Glasner stressed that any sale must be contingent on securing a high-quality alternative. "We’ve discussed this, and the decision is clear: we’ll only let Marc go if we have the right replacement," he added. The manager also praised Guehi's professionalism and character, calling him "a great guy" whose departure would jeopardize the squad's stability.
Liverpool has reportedly considered Joe Gomez as a potential counterpart, but the Reds are unwilling to loan the 28-year-old or sell him outright, complicating the deal. Guehi's recent performance against Aston Villa and his role in Palace's early-season success have only reinforced Glasner's stance.
As the transfer window progresses, Crystal Palace's position remains firm. The club’s recent achievements—unbeaten in six games, winning the Community Shield, and qualifying for the Conference League group stage—underscore the value of retaining their captain. With the Premier League season underway, the focus shifts to whether Palace can meet Liverpool's demands or hold onto their key asset.
