Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike has expressed his enthusiasm about the arrival of Alexander Isak, stating that the competition will aid his personal growth at the club. The 23-year-old Ekitike, who joined Liverpool for £69 million this summer, has made a promising start, netting five goals in his first 10 appearances.
The Premier League champions pursued Isak relentlessly throughout the transfer window, ultimately securing his services for a British record fee of £125 million on the final day. Manager Arne Slot's plans for integrating both players into his squad have been a topic of much discussion, as the duo has yet to share the pitch together.
Ekitike welcomed Isak's addition, emphasizing the value of having multiple top-tier strikers at a club of Liverpool's stature. "I think it's beneficial to have several players in a big club like this," Ekitike said. "I can't imagine a major club relying on just one striker, so having him here is a positive thing."
The young forward acknowledged the opportunity for growth that comes with such competition. "Even at my age, I believe there's still a lot I can improve and learn, so having him here is advantageous for me," he added.
When asked about the possibility of playing together, Ekitike deferred to the manager's tactics. "That's for the coach to decide how he wants to play. That's not my call," he said. However, he expressed confidence in his versatility, having experience in both one and two-striker formations.
Both strikers made an impact against Southampton in the Carabao Cup last week, with Ekitike replacing Isak at halftime. Ekitike later reflected on his red card incident, admitting it was a poor decision. "I think that wasn't smart," he said. "I punished myself alone. I felt disappointed watching the team from home, but I've apologized to everyone, including my teammates. That kind of thing won't happen again."
Ekitike, who plays for the France national team, is now focused on moving forward and concentrating on his football. The competition with Isak is expected to drive both players to new heights, benefiting Liverpool in the process.
