Nixon Agasiirwe, a former Senior Superintendent of Police and commander of the Police Special Operations, has been formally charged in the murder case of state prosecutor Joan Kagezi, who was killed in 2015. His arrest follows a confession from a convicted hitman who has named Agasiirwe as the mastermind behind the assassination.

Agasiirwe appeared in court on Monday at the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court, where he was charged with murder under sections 183 and 184 of the Penal Code Act. The prosecution claims that Agasiirwe, along with accomplices who are still unidentified, acted with malice to cause Kagezi’s death on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule, Nakawa Division, Kampala.

Due to the serious nature of the accusations, Agasiirwe was not permitted to enter a plea, as such cases are exclusively under the jurisdiction of the High Court. State prosecutor Joseph Kyomuhendo informed the court that investigations are ongoing and requested additional time to finalize their inquiries.

Chief Magistrate Esther Nyadoi ordered that Agasiirwe be remanded in Luzira Prison until July 8, as the case continues to unfold. His arraignment comes after Daniel Kisekka, 47, a convicted hitman, entered a plea bargain and confessed to his involvement in the murder, subsequently turning state witness. During a session at the High Court in Kampala, Kisekka testified that the killing was commissioned by an individual referred to only as "Nixon."

Joan Kagezi was a prominent prosecutor known for handling significant terrorism and war crimes cases, including those linked to the 2010 Kampala bombings. Her assassination sent shockwaves throughout the nation and led to prolonged investigations that have now resurfaced with renewed urgency.
