Everton has secured the services of Manchester City and England winger Jack Grealish on a season-long loan deal. The 29-year-old, who has been a British record signing at £100 million, becomes the Toffees' sixth summer acquisition, following the arrivals of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Charly Alcaraz, Thierno Barry, Mark Travers, and Adam Aznou.
Grealish expressed his excitement about the move, stating, "I'm thrilled to join Everton. It's a massive step for me, and this is a fantastic club with incredible fans." He highlighted his conversations with Everton manager David Moyes as a key factor in his decision to move to Goodison Park.
"As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew Everton was the place for me," Grealish said. "I've received an overwhelming amount of support from Everton fans on social media, which also played a significant role in my choice."
Grealish is expected to make his debut for Everton in their Premier League opener against Leeds United on Monday. The England international joined City from Aston Villa in August 2021 and has since made over 150 appearances for the club, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the FA Cup. However, his playing time diminished last season, with only seven league starts and exclusion from the Club World Cup squad.
Everton boss David Moyes welcomed Grealish, noting, "We're acquiring him at an excellent time. He's experienced, understands the Premier League, and we're aware of the high level he can perform at. We're eager to work with him and provide the platform for him to showcase his best form."
Grealish will don the number 18 shirt, a number previously worn by his idols Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne. "There's a reason I chose number 18," Grealish explained. "Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne are my favorite English players, and they both wore this number at Everton. I spoke to Wayne about it, and I hope he's pleased."
Analysts are speculating on Grealish's potential position in Moyes' lineup. Historically, Grealish has played primarily on the left wing, both at Manchester City and Aston Villa. However, his arrival at Everton, coupled with the club's search for a right-winger, might see him in a central role, which could demand more defensive duties.
Everton fans are eagerly anticipating Grealish's debut, hoping he can help the team secure a spot in European competitions and regain his form for the England national team.
