Grimsby Town continued their remarkable Carabao Cup run with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the third round on Tuesday night. The win marks Grimsby's first appearance in the fourth round of the competition in 24 years, coming after their stunning upset of Manchester United in the previous round.
The match, held at Hillsborough Stadium, saw Grimsby's Jaze Kabia score the lone goal in the 49th minute, heading in a corner kick from Reece Staunton. The goal came just minutes into the second half, with the Mariners eager to capitalize on the chances they had created in the first half.
Sheffield Wednesday, fielding a team dominated by teenagers in protest against owner Dejphon Chansiri, struggled to create significant scoring opportunities. The Owls' cup exit adds to their woes, as they have only secured wins in the Carabao Cup this season, currently languishing near the bottom of the Championship standings.
Grimsby's victory was celebrated by the 6,000 traveling fans who brought an energetic atmosphere to Hillsborough. The fans' support was palpable throughout the match, with chants and cheers echoing around the stadium as their team secured the historic win.
Grimsby manager David Artell praised his team's achievement, acknowledging the significance of reaching the last 16 of any competition. "To get to the last 16 of any competition, regardless of who you face, is a terrific achievement," Artell said. "The fact that it’s not been done for 24 years shows that level of achievement."
Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen expressed disappointment in the loss but expressed pride in his team's performance, particularly the development of the young players. "I’m disappointed that we have lost, but behind this loss I’m again really happy for the performance from our young guys," Pedersen said.
The fourth-round draw will take place after the conclusion of the third round, with Port Vale's match against Arsenal set to determine the final pairings.
