Uganda Cranes coach Morley Byekwaso is optimistic that the upcoming Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 could mark a turning point for the team. Despite participating in nearly every edition of the tournament, Uganda has never advanced beyond the group stages. However, Byekwaso believes that playing on home soil could change their fortunes.

"That first game is crucial," Byekwaso emphasized. "It's not just about tactics; it's about mindset. The players must realize the opportunity they have—not just to compete, but to inspire."

Uganda is set to face Algeria, Guinea, Niger, and South Africa in the group stage. The tournament kicks off on August 2 in Dar es Salaam, with Uganda’s campaign beginning two days later at the Mandela National Stadium against Algeria. Byekwaso is determined to shift the narrative from mere participation to meaningful progression. "It’s time we stop being content with just being there. We are building a team that believes in moving forward," he added.

This edition of CHAN will also mark a historic moment for Uganda as the team will be coached by local coaches, albeit under the oversight of national team coach Paul Put. A squad of 41 players is currently in training, with final selections expected to be made by next week.

With the support of home fans and a renewed sense of purpose, the Uganda Cranes are aiming to make history by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in the tournament’s history.
