In the midst of a lavish and star-studded 18th birthday celebration, Barcelona and Spain's rising star, Lamine Yamal, is now under investigation by the Spanish government due to allegations of exploitation. The luxury event, which had a mafia theme, is under scrutiny for hiring individuals with dwarfism, as footage of several performers leaving his party has circulated on social media. The controversy has sparked concern within Spain's government and the ADEE - Spain's Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasia - who have expressed their disapproval and threatened legal action against the teenager.
ADEE President Carolina Puente stated, "It's unacceptable that in the 21st century, people with dwarfism continue to be used as entertainment at private parties. And even more serious when these incidents involve public figures like Lamine Yamal." Spain's General Director of Disability, Jesús Martín, has called on ministers to approve a government investigation into the party.
If found guilty, Lamine Yamal could face a fine of approximately £867,000. The investigation aims to determine why Yamal allegedly hired the performers and what they were asked to do at the party. Laws in Spain prohibit the public exposure or criticism of a person due to their disability. The official added, "We are concerned that people with money, people with power, believe themselves to be unpunished." The law is for everyone, for the humble and the powerful. Let the appropriate investigations be opened, and let action be taken based on the conclusions."
Yamal has yet to comment on the allegations. However, he has shared a minute-long clip of the party on his Instagram, which has already garnered over a million likes. The video showcases Yamal in a white suit, cane, and his signature bleached blonde hair, as well as his teammates, glamorous women, and flashy entertainers.
As the investigation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of respect and sensitivity when it comes to individuals with disabilities, especially in the public eye.
