Veteran boxer Derek Chisora has asserted that Jake Paul is likely to retire from boxing following his recent defeat to Anthony Joshua. The YouTuber-turned-boxer, Jake Paul, endured a grueling six-round match against two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in Miami, ultimately succumbing to a knockout in the sixth round. Paul sustained a broken jaw in the process, which required surgical intervention.
During an appearance on SunSport's Split Decision, Chisora expressed his opinion that the mental and physical trauma from the fight will deter Paul from continuing his boxing career. "That guy is not going to box anymore," Chisora stated. "After he had a broken jaw, he's going to have PTSD. He's not going to box anymore, he's done."
Despite Paul's resilience in the ring, where he managed to get up after being knocked down four times, Chisora believes the severity of the injury and the psychological impact will be too much for Paul to overcome. "Real boxers come back, YouTubers don't come back," Chisora added, emphasizing his belief that Paul's boxing journey is over.
The fight, which took place in Miami, was highly anticipated but drew criticism for its lack of action. Fans and commentators alike were disappointed with the pace and intensity of the match. Joshua, who called out Tyson Fury post-fight, is expected to face Fury in a highly anticipated heavyweight showdown in 2026. Meanwhile, Paul is facing a significant recovery period, potentially sidelining him for at least six months.
Cruiserweight contender Viddal Riley, now signed to KSI's Misfits Pro banner, offered a different perspective. Riley suggested that Paul might return to the ring to fulfill his promotional responsibilities and secure exposure for his Most Valuable Promotions stable. "Jake's got a lot of responsibilities to deliver to all the fighters that are under his banner," Riley said. "They can't get that exposure if he's not the main event doing something crazy."
Chisora did express interest in one potential matchup involving Paul, suggesting a fight between Paul and fellow online rival KSI. "The only fight that I'd like to see happen is Jake Paul and KSI," Chisora said. "I'd be there ringside. That's the fight I wanna see. They've been going at it for like the last 20 years! Just get it done."
As the boxing world speculates on Paul's future, the focus remains on his recovery and potential return to the sport. For now, the debate continues on whether the former YouTuber will hang up his gloves for good or make a comeback in the ring.
