Jofra Archer has declared his availability for England’s final two Tests against India, marking a significant moment in his comeback journey. The fast bowler, who recently returned to Test cricket after a four-year hiatus due to injuries, played a pivotal role in England’s thrilling 22-run victory at Lord’s, which gave the hosts a 2-1 series lead.
Archer’s performance in the third Test silenced any doubts about his fitness and ability to compete at the highest level. He claimed a wicket with his third delivery and went on to take three more in India’s second innings, helping England defend a modest target of 192. The 30-year-old bowled 39.2 overs at an impressive pace, with his average speed consistently above 87mph and 41 deliveries exceeding 90mph.
Despite concerns over managing his workload, especially with back-to-back Tests at Old Trafford and The Oval, Archer is eager to continue contributing. “I can play the other two if they let me,” he said. “I don’t want to lose this series. I said I wanted to play the Test summer and the Ashes. One tick is already there, and I will do everything possible to be on the plane to Australia in November.”
Archer’s return to Test cricket marks a significant milestone after a challenging period marred by back and elbow injuries. His last Test appearance before Lord’s was in early 2021 against India in Ahmedabad. Reflecting on his journey, Archer expressed no doubts about his comeback, stating, “No. Obviously, it would have been the format which would have taken the most time to return to.”
Since Archer’s absence, England’s Test team has undergone a transformation under the leadership of captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum. The team has embraced an aggressive style of play, winning 25 of their 39 Tests since Stokes took charge. Archer praised the team’s approach, saying, “The mentality of the team under 'Baz' suits the way I like to play. I just couldn’t wait to get back and actually do it.”
In other squad news, England has recalled spinner Liam Dawson after an eight-year absence to replace the injured Shoaib Bashir for the fourth Test, which begins on 23 July. Archer will be joined by fellow seamers Gus Atkinson, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Josh Tongue as England aims to secure the series victory.
Archer’s return adds a formidable edge to England’s bowling attack, providing a significant boost as they look to close out the series on a high note.
