Juventus Appoint Spalletti on Interim Basis

Former Italy Coach Steps In After Tudor Sacking

Italian football giants Juventus Football Club have named Luciano Spalletti as their new manager, effective immediately until the conclusion of the current Serie A season. This decision comes after the club parted ways with manager Igor Tudor, who was dismissed following a defeat to Lazio on the previous weekend. Spalletti, the 66-year-old former Italy national team manager, arrives at Turin after a highly decorated managerial career. He previously led clubs including Inter Milan, Roma, and Zenit St Petersburg to significant successes. Notably, he guided Napoli to the Serie A title in the 2022-23 season and also steered the Azzurri (Italy's national team) through qualifying campaigns, albeit controversially, before being sacked in June 2023. In contrast, Tudor's tenure at Juventus was short-lived, lasting just seven months. His dismissal followed an eight-match run without a win since joining the club in March, replacing the previously sacked Thiago Motta.

Juventus' Current Struggles

The Old Lady currently finds itself in seventh place in Serie A following nine games, trailing leaders Napoli by six points. A recent 3-1 win against Udinese saw the team managed temporarily by Massimo Brambilla. Furthermore, Juventus' participation in the UEFA Champions League has been uncharacteristic, sitting 25th in their group after losing once and drawing twice in their initial three matches.

Spalletti's Appointment Context

The search for a permanent replacement for Thiago Motta was already underway before Tudor's dismissal, following multiple defeats during the international break. The club's decision to appoint Spalletti, a well-respected figure in Italian football despite his recent Italy exit, underscores the urgency felt at the helm to stabilize the first team's performance mid-season.
