Despite falling short in their semifinal clash against Kenya, Uganda’s Lady Cranes 7s team showcased resilience to clinch bronze at the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s 7s tournament. The Cranes delivered a commanding performance in the third-place playoff, securing a 33-12 victory over Madagascar’s Maki Ladies.

Uganda started the match with explosive energy, racking up three swift converted tries from Peace Lekuru, Samiya Ayikoru, and Grace Nabaggala to establish an early lead. Madagascar, however, mounted a spirited counterattack, slicing into the deficit with a fluid team try featuring seamless offloads that breached the Cranes’ defense.

The momentum shifted decisively in Uganda’s favor after Suzan Adong and tournament standout Lydia Namabiro added further tries, widening the gap to a 21-point advantage. The introduction of Yvonne Najjuma in the second half proved pivotal, as her physicality and post-tackle surges rejuvenated the team’s attack. Najjuma’s impactful runs set up Unity Namulala for a crucial try in the closing stages.

While the Lady Cranes settled for third place for the third tournament in a row, Lydia Namabiro shone individually, finishing as the competition’s top try scorer—a testament to her consistency and attacking prowess on the regional stage.
