Vancouver Whitecaps have secured the signing of German football icon Thomas Müller, the club announced Thursday, marking the striker’s first career move after 25 years with Bayern Munich. The 35-year-old joins Major League Soccer on a deal spanning the remainder of the 2025 season, with an option to extend through 2026 as a Designated Player.

Müller’s storied Bayern career concluded this summer after his contract expired, ending a tenure that included 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies. Vancouver acquired his discovery rights from FC Cincinnati in exchange for $200,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM), $100,000 in 2026 GAM, and conditional future funds, per MLS roster rules.

"I’m eager to contribute to Vancouver’s championship ambitions," said Müller, who will finalize his move pending visa approval. "The discussions with the leadership team convinced me this is the right challenge. The fans’ energy at BC Place will be crucial as we target playoff success."

The 2014 World Cup champion, who netted 45 goals in 131 appearances for Germany, brings veteran savvy to a Whitecaps squad currently second in the Western Conference, trailing San Diego by one point with 10 regular-season matches left. His arrival bolsters Vancouver’s attack ahead of a critical postseason push.

As a Designated Player, Müller’s salary won’t count against Vancouver’s cap, providing flexibility for the club to build around his experience. The move signals the Whitecaps’ ambition to compete for their first MLS Cup since joining the league in 2011.
