Liverpool have finalized the acquisition of French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal valued at £79m (€91.5m), with the Premier League champions paying an initial £69m plus performance-related add-ons. The 23-year-old becomes Liverpool's latest marquee signing as their summer expenditure approaches £300m.

The transfer followed Liverpool's pivot from Newcastle forward Alexander Isak, who was deemed unavailable. Frankfurt had earlier rejected Newcastle's club-record £70m bid for Ekitike, with Liverpool strategically entering negotiations once the Magpies neared an agreement - mirroring their 2022 approach to secure Luis Diaz. Manchester United reportedly attempted an eleventh-hour intervention, but Ekitike prioritized a move to Anfield.

Ekitike contributed 22 goals across 48 appearances last season, propelling Frankfurt to Champions League qualification. Liverpool's technical staff envision the versatile attacker leading the line as a central striker while possessing adaptability to operate in wide areas or as a secondary forward. Frankfurt's manager described his departure as "a bitter loss" following the player's omission from a recent preseason fixture.

This acquisition elevates Liverpool's summer spending to £295.5m - surpassing Chelsea as the Premier League's highest spenders by over £75m. Financial experts indicate the club retains significant headroom under Profit and Sustainability Rules, bolstered by a record £613.8m revenue last season and player sales including Jarell Quansah's £35m move to Bayer Leverkusen. Performance bonuses in Ekitike's contract are predominantly linked to collective trophy success and individual contributions.
